This year we have invited three artists to research and respond to different areas of the collection. They will work with you to share their passion, expertise, process and methodology and reveal how the Galleries artworks have influenced their own practice.
Mary Greg Collection Mary Greg’s collection of over 1000 domestic and craft based objects has often been seen as chaotic, sentimental and bizarre. Ceramicist Sharon Blakey, has been exploring these objects to gather inspiration for her own work, where historic collections inform contemporary practice. She will explore objects that have personal significance for your pupils and introduce creative processes including wire sketching and clay working.
Date: 12 November 2009
Etchings by Francesco de GoyaThis exhibition showcases around thirty rarely displayed etchings that demonstrate the extraordinary imagination, wit, satire and cruelty, which define Goya’s work. Fine Artist, Katy McCall, has been working with the curator of this exhibition and young people to develop innovative interpretations examining issues that remain relevant today. She will use her experiences and expertise to introduce drawing techniques that will culminate in a final print in response to these timeless themes.
Date : 9 February 2010
Gallery of Costume CollectionThe Gallery of Costume is due to re-open in March 2010, and will have new spaces dedicated for exhibitions and educational activities. The summer exhibition will be the work produced by contemporary textile artist Alice Kettle, who is known for her dramatic figurative panels built up using free machine embroidery. Alice has drawn inspiration from boxes of gloves, portrait photos and caricatures and using her trade mark stitch drawings will work with your pupils to produce a range of samples.

A fabulous and informative day, which I enjoyed very much. A chance to see the gallery in a different light.

We can visit your school to attend staff meetings and demonstrate how art works featured on the gallery website can be used with interactive whiteboards. This is a fantastic opportunity to prepare or extend an actual visit to the gallery.
