Directorate
The Directorate is responsible for the strategic management of the department and for taking a lead on Cultural and Heritage Management issues within the City Council as a whole. The Director is also the lead Chief Officer for the Cultural Strategy. The Director is also the lead Officer for the North West Regional Hub of Galleries and Museums. The Assistant Director takes a lead role on capital programmes and special projects in the department.
The Directorate consists of the following members of staff;

Finance & Business Services Division
Finance & Support Services division is responsible for the smooth operation of a range of 'back of house' services in the Department. These include;
- Financial and administrative management
- Payment of accounts due
- Receiving income due to the department
- Information Communication Technology (ICT) equipment ordering and Management of the departments ICT assets
Public Services
This division is responsible for the marketing and promotion of the service. They are also responsible for the various trading activities taking place in our venues. In addition they manage the contract we have with our catering and hospitality partners - Millburns. The main activities carried out are:
- Marketing and branding
- Press and communications
- Audience Development
- Corporate Hospitality
- Catering
- The Manchester Art Gallery Shop
- Website content
- Image licensing
- Branch trading activities
Public Programmes
The division carries out wide range of educational activities both within our venues and in the community. The main areas of work are;
- Schools and Colleges - workshops which are taught in the Gallery by Freelance Gallery Teachers
- Self Programming Groups - groups from a range of educational institutions visiting the Gallery but not in a formal session
- Lifelong Learning Events - workshops and other events which are open to members of the public to attend
- Outreach Work - work with groups in the community on arts based projects which can either be in the Gallery or in the community
Development
The Development Unit is responsible for both co-ordinating and carrying out fundraising activities for the service. The funds come from a range of sources including Charitable Trusts and Foundations, private donors, the Corporate Patrons Scheme and the Manchester City Galleries Development Trust. The Development Trust is a separate Charitable Trust that has been established to work with ourselves to develop the range of services we are able to offer.
Collections and Operations
Collections and Operations Division is responsible for the care of our Collections, which have been Designated as of national importance. The division is also responsible for the programme of displays and exhibitions that take place in our venues. The Division is split into teams as follows;
- Fine Art
- Decorative Art
- Collections Management (including Documentation)
- Exhibitions
- Conservation
- Gallery of Costume - based at Platt Hall, Rusholme
Visitor Services
Visitor Services is our largest group of staff, and is the group who have day-to-day contact with visitors to our venues. They are responsible for visitor care and information. The staff carry out an interpretation role in the Galleries answering a wide range of questions from visitors about many aspects of our collections. There other main duties include;
- The security of our Collections and premises,
- Health & Safety of visitors,
- Assisting with Exhibition turn rounds,
- Management and supervision of contractors while on our premises
- Buildings and facilities management
- Management of the Security Lodge and Loading Bay area
- Operation of the CCTV systems
- Corporate Hospitality and Events.
